		<description>Editorial Statement

Finding Solace In Nostalgia
Nostalgia is a bittersweet gift that has become a steadfast presence since the beginning of the pandemic. Reunited with friends from a long time ago and forming new relationships, we find ourselves unsure about the future. We seek comfort in past memories, and nostalgia trickles up our neck and face and we blush at how good we had it. This has been our first full school year back in person and after living in such uncertain times, composing this book has unleashed a new hope for the future as we remember what once was.
The works for this year’s Redlands Review were selected to symbolize two things as we emerge from the pandemic that has disrupted our lives for the last two years: a look back at nostalgic times and memories, as well as, a look forward towards the promising future that lies ahead. Compiled in this book are wonderful pieces from University of Redlands students and alumni ranging in genre from poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual media that achieve the two ideas we looked for this year.
Submissions this year were rich with prose and poetry. The creation process of composing poetry is reflective for the writer, offering readers a more intimate view into the poet’s mind. Given the self-isolation and mental strain of the past two years, it’s no surprise many creators had a collection of artistic and personal pieces to share. The therapeutic nature of writing poetry was an outlet for many artists left alone to their thoughts during a period of global loss and grief.
The unique design and layout are representative of the fresh spirits the spring semester of 2022 has emulated. We extend our gratitude to the design team that put in several late nights into creating this lovely literary review.
With that, we present to you the Redlands Review of 2022.

			Ode to Everything

			Emily Adair

This is an Ode to Everything.

An ode to drifting between fruit trees, never picking,
never stepping up to home plate
			relinquishing ambition.

An ode to staring life down and wondering how you are going to fill the time.
			Not having enough time.
Value impermanence: the bad will pass you by but the good is gone too quick.

This is an ode to Bruce Springsteen, Sam Cooke, and Janis Joplin
and the Ohio summer my grandfather died and was buried in.
His chair is still empty back home.

This is an ode to adornments, vanity, libations, liberation

I am afraid to die. What if whatever happens after this isn’t good?
This is an ode to who you love now; you cannot have them forever.

To brain freeze, lung burn, we haven’t run that fast since we were kids,
all your dead incarnations discarded in your past life like snake-skin shed over stones.

Thank you for forgiveness immeasurable, and the heart’s possibilities, infinite.

salvaged art
pungent divinity spilling out of Sunday Mass
Money found in deep coat pockets,
			good soup

This is an ode to the villages that fly by outside train windows

We, the interlopers, the transients, the passing-through.

			A Sara Ahmed

¡Tener y no querer!
Tener sueño y no querer dormir,
			quererte y no poder tenerte
			que juegito tan macabro.

En un mundo sin una axis vertical
y solo con noción de movimiento,
			de transcurrencia temporal
			tal vez ahí podría tenerte
			y tu quererme.
Ahi podria sentir tu piel morena
			labrada de piedra volcánica
tal guerrero jaguar listo para la batalla.

En ese lugar sin sentido de derechez,
tal podría decirte cuan mucho tu presencia
			me hace temblar
como ciudad construida en un lago
			de ilusiones y esperanzas,
de lagunas mentales donde no se si
			tu nombre o tu cara

Tengo sueño y dormir no quiero,
cerrar los ojos me da pavor
			pero si eso significa entrar
en un mundo sin línea vertical,
			entonces dormir quiero por siempre
			para así tenerte poder,
			y que tu me percibas
no como objeto, sino como sujeto
uno igual a tu misma dirección.

Que juego tan macabro,
			quererte y no tenerte.
Cierro mis ojos y tu manos
			me despiertan.

Emiliano Arizmendi

			To Sara Ahmed

I’m afraid of going to sleep
of wasting my time in the inactivity of dreaming.
I’m afraid of closing my eyes
and for the grams of life to burn up
by the fire of my sleeping neurons,
with the flames of your memory
just like tobacco touching your lips
			in a symbolic dream.

To have and not to want!
Having to sleep and not wanting to sleep,
to want you and not be able to have you
			what a macabre silly game.

In a world without a vertical axis
and only with the notion of movement,
			of temporal lapse
maybe there I could have you
			and you would want me.
There I could feel your brown skin
			carved out of volcanic stone
like a jaguar warrior ready for battle.

In that place without a sense of rectitude,
I could tell you how much your presence
			makes me shake
like a city built on a lake
			of illusions and hopes,
of mental gaps where I don’t know if
			your name or your face
			are my own.
You smile and I take your cheek,
the blackness of your shirt is lost in your eyes
just like my neurons are wasted in your memories
and my blood circulates once again
to the rhythm of your hands,
			your Centenarios smile.

I have to sleep but don’t want to sleep
			closing my eyes scares me
			but if that means entering
in a world with no vertical line,
then I want to dream forever
			so I can have you,
and so that you perceive me
not as an object, but as a subject
one equal to your same direction.

			What a macabre game
to want you and to not have you.
I close my eyes and your hands
			wake me up.

cuando me quito las mascaras que aprendí to wear, todavía hay una sonrisa on my face. Encuentro confort en el arte de la palabra y la imagen. I’ve made my imaginación mi hogar. En las paginas de mi notebook, pinto con the words I know. Juego con las fotografias basadas en la realidad and I bring them into my rainbowed universe. Algunas veces estoy sentado y no se que escribir because se me olvida quien soy. I am a writer, un artista, I am a listener. Soy un Imaginator. Soy dark and twisty pero también tengo esperanza. Encuentro una manera para sonreír and to roll out of bed. I am a curious person who loves to explore. I am an inquisitive person who asks a shitton of questions. Soy un Creador de Realidades. My work: invites you to come into my imaginative world
